Checking for Broken Links on your WordPress Site
I was not really looking for this WordPress plugin, but I kept seeing it on all the “Top Ten Plugins” sites and so I decided to check it out.
When you have outbound links on your WordPress site, it can take quite a bit of time and effort to routinely verify each of them on a regular basis. People that you link to can change their sites and when they do, your outbound links may stop working.
The WordPress solution is a plugin called Broken Link Checker. It is a very simple and easy to use plugin with just a few configuration options:
- How often it verifies your links
- Who to send emails to about broken links (administrator and/or author)
- Link Tweaks for custom link formatting
On the day we installed the plugin, it found one link that I had not stumbled upon during my manual link checking routine. Within 10 days it found a new broken link.
When a broken link is found you can be notified by email, and it will also show up in your site’s dashboard. You just click the notification and you will be taken to a screen showing the link or links that are broken. Click each one and then you can either edit or delete the problem link. It’s just that simple!
In my opinion, Broken Link Checker is an absolute Essential WordPress Plugin for your site. No two ways about it, just install it and you can be assured that all our outbound links will be working, and if not, the plugin will let you know.
